Texas Hold’Em - Game Synopsis

Texas Hold’Em is a seven-card poker game.

Before each game begins, the two players sitting to the left of the dealer, place what are known as ‘Blind’ bets. The first player places the ‘small blind’ and the second player places the ‘big blind’. The blind amounts are set by the tournament operators and rise at pre-determined intervals throughout the game. The purpose of the blind bets is to commence the action.

Once the ‘blinds’ have been submitted, dealing commences. After each dealing stage (outlined below), a round of betting takes place.

The Four Dealing Stages:

Stage One:

Hole Cards:

Each player is dealt two cards face down (one at a time). These are the players’ own cards and one or both of them can be used with the five face up (community or shared) cards to make up their own five card poker hand.

Now the community/shared cards are dealt

Stage Two:

The Flop:

The dealer burns one card (deals a card face down), and then three cards are dealt face up in the centre of the table; these cards are known as ‘The Flop’. Players may now bet or check.

Stage Three:

The Turn or Fourth Street:

Again, the dealer burns one card. Another card is now dealt face up in the centre of the table. Players, now, once again, bet or check.

Stage Four:

The River or Fifth Street

Once again, one card is burned by the dealer. At this stage the final community card is dealt to the centre of the table.

A final round of betting now takes place, after which the remaining players show their cards. The player with the best five-card poker hand takes the pot.
